Durham List of Hills

March 11.  The Durham Historical Society has completed an extensive study of hills in the town and reports the names of 78 such landmarks throughout the community.  The old names as well as the more recent names of some of the hills have been recorded by the Society and are as follows:
 
Aramamit Hill, a part of Aramamit Farm, where Arthur Bailey’s house stands.
 
Arbutus Hill, north of Abner Newton’s toward Middletown.
 
Arnold Hill, east of Heaton Blakeslee’s, where Col. Arnold drilled troops for the    Revolutionary War.
 
Bailey Hill Road, east of Jeremiah Bailey homestead, now W. Strechel estate.
 
Beaver Knoll, in Durham meadow, north of the New Haven Road, west of Coginchaug River; another at north end of the swamp.
 
Beseck Mountain, south of W. Asman Place, now Wesley Barrett’s.
 
Blinn Hill, on Maiden Lane near C. Howard Roberts.
 
Blueberry Hill, east of Shelley’s land.
 
Blue Hills, in region of the Vynalek farm.
 
Breeze Hill, on Wallingford Road at John Asman’s, formerly Clingon Hill.
 
Burwell Newton Hill, road southeast at four corners on Haddam Quarter Road.
 
Camp Hill, on Maiden Lane, at Samuel Camp’s, now James Pareis.
 
Chalker Hill, on old Madison Road near and north of Robert Hyatt.
 
Chauncey Hill, off Higganum Road to Lyman estate; also Strawberry Hill.
 
Clam Shell Hill, near the first four corners on Guilford Road.
 
Clingon Hill, on Wallingford Road, also Breeze Hill.
 
Coe Hill, on Coe Road north of the William Coe homestead.
 
Coginchaug Hill, approach to the Coginchaug YMCA camp off Maiden Lane.
 
Crooked Hill, off Guilford Road from Blake’s to Mica Road.
 
Davis Hill, land east of Indian Lane.
 
Deacon’s Hill, on Wallingford Road; also called Righteous Hill, from the Coginchaug River to P. J. Rich’s house.
 
Dunn Hill, off Wallingford Road, extension of Tuttle Road toward Lyman Farm.
 
Durham Hill, at Barnes Orchard and at the town line N. E.
 
Feeding Hill, on South End Avenue, opposite Miss Annette Francis’ house.
 
Foote Hill, at four corners, Haddam Quarter Road toward Middletown from Harvey house.
 
Grassy Hill, land east of Burwell Newton Hill road.
 
Great Hill, part of Robert Shuler’s farm.
 
Green Hill, the road east from the DeMacarthy house.
 
Griswold Hill, the road on Maiden Lane at Gaylord Newton’s.
 
Guernsey Hill, Haddam Quarter Road north of four corners to Johnson Lane, now Millbrook Road.
 
Guide Board Hill, on Higganum Road.
 
Harrington Hill, site of Cleveland Stannard, Jr.’s, home.
 
Hubbard Hill, at junction of Bear Rock Road and Guide Board.
 
Jackson Hill, pasture land, part of Brookfield Farm on Tuttle Road.
 
Lava Hill, named because of ancient volcano near Robert Grody’s house.
 
Lyman Hill, from Swathel farm north to Little Lane.
 
Meeker Hill, on Madison Road south of the Mousch home.
 
Meetinghouse Hill, from Wilkinson Hill to the early town plat in 1699.
 
Mica Hill, off Guilford Road to George Gulielmetti’s house.
 
Mill Hill, from Allyn’s or Mill Brook to the Durham Public Library.
 
Miller’s Pond Hill, from the pond to the town line, S.E.
 
New Road Hill, near south town line, vicinity of Shuler’s.
 
Nigger Hill, on Wallingford Road opposite Edward Clark’s house, hill named for Negro hut, north side of the road.
 
Old Road Hill, now Oak Terrace.
 
Old Saw Mill Hill, off Middlefield road—east.
 
Parmelee Hill, at Parmelee Farm house.
 
Philada Hill, on Haddam Quarter Road east of J. Edward Newton’s house.
 
Pickett Hill, where the Durham Central School stands.
 
Pignut Hill, Wallingford Road west of Tibballs Hill.
 
Pisgah Hill, old Madison Road east of Pisgah Mountain.
 
Pistapaugh Hill, north of Pistapaugh Pond, now a State park.
 
Potash Hill, on old discontinued road west of Pignut Hill off Wallingford Road.
 
Pouch Hill, off Maiden Lane, southeast of Emily Merwin house.
 
Powder Hill, at northwest corner of town line west of Lyman Orchards.
 
Prout Hill, at Indian Lane; all hillside west of Lane.
 
Quarry Hill, from Main Street on Wallingford Road to the meadow.
 
Raccoon Hill, off the New Haven Road toward Raccoon Club House; Righteous Hill, Wallingford Road from Coginchaug River to P. J. Rich’s house; also Deacon’s Hill.
 
Round Hill, on Wallingford Road opposite John Asman house.
 
Sand Hill, from South End Avenue to the Madison Road.
 
School House Hill, at West Side School, west of Parmelee Hill.
 
Skeet Club Hill, Middlefield Road toward Lyman Farm.
 
Southmayd Hill, Haddam Quarter Road from John Southmayd to Daniel Southmayd house, east of Duck Farm.
 
Stowe Hill, on Stagecoach Road, opposite John Mazzolini’s house.
 
Strawberry Hill, driveway off Higganum Road to Lyman estate, also called Chauncey Hill.
 
Swathel Hill, on Middletown Road, north of Swathel House.
 
Sunset Hill, west of the Rockwood house, northwest of the Green and end of Maple Avenue.
 
Three Notches, south of West Mountain—Beseck Range.
 
Tibball’s Hill, on Wallingford Road east of Pignut Hill at Brookfield Farm.
 
Tub Hill, on Howd Road, at the horse trough, south of the John Steven’s house, now Fred Clark’s.
 
Tuttle Hill, Tuttle Road at the Bailey Farm.
 
Wadsworth, Madison Road from Heaton Blakeslee’s south.
 
West Mountain, directly west from town, at the beacon on Beseck Range.
 
Wheeler’s Hill, on Maiden Lane north of Philip Robert’s house.
 
Widow’s Knoll, on New Haven Road where Burton Parmelee’s house stands (also Knob Hill).
 
Wilkinson Hill, from Meeting House Hill to Guilford Road.
