Parade Notice and Grand Marshal Announcement:

The 2024 Durham Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 27th. The parade will step off at 9:15AM at the corner of Haddam Quarter Road and Main Street, and then continue down Main Street to the Durham Town Green. Parade participants should assemble at the corner between 8:15 and 8:30.

Immediately following the parade there will be a ceremony at the Town Green honoring our nation’s servicemen and servicewomen. The parade will take place rain or shine.

Mr. Elmer Clark will be the 2024 Durham Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal. Clark is a life long resident of the Town of Durham and a US Army veteran. He graduated from Durham High School in 1959 and Quinnipiac College in 1963.

Upon completing college, Clark volunteered for the Army in July of 1963. He was assigned to the 9th Hospital Medical Command in Heidelberg, West Germany for 31 months. He served honorably in a Personnel Office assigning orders to Doctors and Nurses to one of eleven hospitals under the 9th Hospital’s command. While in Germany, he attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5).

While in West Germany, Clark attained permission to travel through East Germany into the divided City of Berlin. Interestingly, Clark is one of the few people in the world who can say he’s seen the Berlin Wall from both sides. Clark left the service in 1966. He returned to his home town, and he has lived with his wife in Durham ever since.
